Savage, M.J.
Sermons of M.J. Savage. Count Tolstoi Vs. Evolution or the Sermon of the Mount and to-Day. Unity Pulpit Boston. Vol. 8 May 20, 1887. No. 35
Boston, George H. Ellis, 1887. First American Edition. Original Wraps. Original wraps. Saddle stapled. 15pp. An essay/sermon by M.J. Savage, analyzing and refuting Count Tolstoi's theories of society and its function. Savage cites Tolstoi of being in favor of abolishing many of the arts and sciences, as well as the abolishment of personal ownership of property, in favor of a more communal style of living. Savage argues against this, suggesting toil and hardship associated with humanity struggling to achieve its individual aims is more in line with God's intent, and in fact, is beared out by the theory of evolution. In FAIR condition. Outer wraps DETACHED from the rest of the pamphlet. Mostly minor soiling to the wraps, slightly more so to the front cover. General minor tanning. A few minor tears and creases along the extremities with a bit more wear along the spine. The cover wraps, attached to each other, are split about halfway along the lower portion.
